Visit Rio de Janeiro in a Day
Jan 11 , 2011
Need to experience Rio de Janeiro in a day? Learn where the must-see attractions are so you make the most of your time!
While it's always nice to spend two weeks soaking up every detail of a city like Rio de Janeiro, it isn't always possible. If you're in town for a business conference, or perhaps just dropping in for one of the many festivals throughout the year, you might be forced to visit Rio de Janeiro in a day. This guide will allow you to experience as much of the city as possible by highlighting some of the best sights and locations in the city. You won't be able to take in everything, but you'll get a good taste of the city, and hopefully a few stories to take home with you.
Downtown
Most of the city's commercial and financial interests are located in the central downtown region. If you're visiting Rio de Janeiro for a day on business, your trip will likely take you to this area. Here, you'll find a number of museums that offer the best of Rio and Brazilian culture, including the National Fine Arts Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. The Sambódromo, the site of Carnival, is also located here. Obviously, if you're in town during the days leading up to Ash Wednesday, you don't want to miss out on the festivities. If not, the Sambódromo is still a great place to unwind after a long day of meetings and relax with music and dance.
Outdoors
Rio de Janeiro is well known for its beaches and nature. If you're a fan of either one, you might consider spending your day in Rio outdoors. Go beach hopping in the southern part of the city—Copacabana and Ipanema are two world renowned beaches, and both are great options form swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sunbathing. You can also go hiking on Sugarloaf Mountain, which bookends Copacabana Beach. If you have to visit Rio de Janeiro in a day, no one will blame you for spending it on the beach soaking up some rays.
Tours
If you don't have enough time to venture outside the city limits for outdoor activities and adventures, consider a bus tour of the city. Your guide can take you through a tour of downtown's culturally and historically significant buildings and locations. You may also book helicopter tours to get an aerial view of the city and its many different neighborhoods. This is probably the best way for busy people to get to see the Statue of Christ, Rio's most famous landmark. It sits at the peak of a mountain that would otherwise likely take too much time if you're only visiting Rio de Janeiro for a day, but a helicopter tour of just six minutes is the perfect way to catch a quality glimpse.
Shopping
If bringing back some souvenirs for your family and friends is a priority, take a stroll through the Hippie Market, which is located in the Praca General Osorio and offers many crafts and interesting items. Havaiana sandals are especially popular, and make for an excellent gift so long as the recipient is a sandal wearer. This is also a great way to rub elbows with the locals and experience daily life in Rio de Janeiro. If you stray away from the Hippie Market, you'll find plenty of other street vendors selling wares.
Rio de Janeiro offers far too much for visitors to get to see it all in one day. However, with a little planning time management, you'll be able to visit Rio de Janeiro in a day and feel like you got a good sense of the city.
