The Rio de Janeiro Marathon invites runners to get a glimpse of the site for the 2016 Olympics by competing in a scenic race through Rio’s city streets on July 8, 2012. More than 100,000 spectators are expected to cheer on the thousands of runners.

Competitors can sign up for either the marathon, half marathon or 6K, although the warm and humid weather of July is often challenging. Past participants comment on the well-organized race committee, the scenery, and the race’s enjoyable long, flat seaside stretches.

With the backdrop of the Serra do Mar Mountains to the right and the ocean to the left, runners line up for the Rio de Janeiro Marathon in Recreio Beach, located on the west side of the city. The race continues to weave through Rio’s streets, passing landmarks, beaches and neighborhoods, on this point-to-point course. Known as one of the most picturesque marathons, competitors run through such well-known neighborhoods as Praia de Reserva, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, and Botafogo, before running uphill to cross the finishing line into Flamengo Park.
