If you're traveling with family, a few friends, or exploring by yourself, this event offers an active way to spend a fun day in the sun. The Rio de Janeiro Marathon is held annually and is known as the "Marvelous City" marathon, and is a great activity for any running enthusiasts or just a fun family outing.

Starting at 7:30 a.m., the gun is fired at Macumba and the race is off, headed along the coast through Rio. With an early start, picturesque landscapes show themselves as the sun rises over the Pacific Ocean. The Rio de Janeiro Marathon includes a full marathon of 42 km (26 miles) and a half-marathon for those who may not be up for the whole thing. In addition to the main marathon event there is a family run held the day before the large marathon, which includes a warm-up stretch session with the run. The Rio de Janeiro Marathon is going to be held July 17th, 2011 with the Family Run the day before, July 16th. The good thing about the events being held during this time is that July is what the Brazilians call their "winter", so the heat is not too intense at the time of the marathon.
